macOS — free legacy edition
Free · v3.4.2 · unsupported
The last free release. It works and your data stays yours, but it is frozen: no updates, no guided setup, and no profession deduction packs.

First launch on macOS
The legacy build isn't signed with an Apple Developer certificate, so macOS will warn about an “unidentified developer” the first time. Right-click the app → Open → Open. You only do this once. If macOS still blocks it after downloading, run:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/PrivateBooks.app"

Where your books are stored
One local SQLite file, plus any receipts you attach. Back it up by copying it, or use the app's own backup, which packages the database and every attachment into a single verified archive. Nothing is stored anywhere else, because there is nowhere else.
